Stellenbosch University (SU) is amongst South Africa’s leading tertiary institutions based on research output, student pass rates and rated scientists, and is recognised internationally as an academic institution of excellence.
SU is paving its way as a world-class institution and, according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, SU is one of the top 300 universities in the world and among the top 20 in BRICS countries. The Clinical Mycobacteriology and Epidemiology (CLIME) research Group, led by A/Prof Grant Theron is based at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences which is attached to the 1600 bed Tygerberg Academic Hospital in Cape Town.
CLIME’s mission is to better improve the lives of individuals with tuberculosis (TB) disease through basic and clinical research targeting populations at high risk of developing this disease. CLIME has a track record of clinical research that translates to influence local and international policies to ultimately improve TB patient care and health systems. The group has three core research interests; improving the diagnosis of TB and drug resistance, understanding the role of the microbiome in TB, and studying the infectiousness of patients and the transmission of TB. In collaboration with local and international commercial, government and non-governmental stakeholders, CLIME has several on-going diagnostic trials across three sites in the Northern suburbs of Cape Town.
